Planning a wedding can be stressful for the Mother of the Bride too, after all, her little girl is getting married and the pressure is on for her to look her best. Here are just a few tips for choosing the right outfit for your Mother of the Bride.
1. Talk about it.
It’s important to have a chat early on, before you start shopping, to discuss the colour scheme of your wedding, what colours would your Mum feel comfortable wearing and if are there any patterns you really want her to avoid. Depending on the time of year, she might want to wear a jacket or shawl so get some ideas for the sort of thing you are looking for.
2. Use your wedding colour scheme.
If you are stuck for the sort of colour your Mum wants to wear, use your wedding theme to find colours that will complement it or even colours to avoid. If your bridesmaids are all wearing Red, you probably don’t want your Mum to wear a heavily patterned Hot Pink dress as this may clash on the photos. It’s generally accepted that only the bride should wear White or Ivory but, especially for summer weddings, I think that Ivory or White accessories are perfectly acceptable for your Mum. I’ve chosen the Cream jacket in the picture because of it’s flattering shape that will make your Mum feel comfortable and I have chosen coloured shoes for an elegant touch of colour.
3. Don’t feel pressured to wear a dress.
I have chosen a subtle pale blue palette for todays outfit inspiration because I love the cute lace effect dress I have featured but if your Mum really isn’t comfortable in a dress there are some great trouser suits around at the moment. Use a statement hat or clutch bag to add a touch of colour if she doesn’t feel comfortable in a bold dress and if your Mum has a great figure you could even look at a jumpsuits to really make her shine on the day.
4. Remember your budget
The outfit you choose will likely be influenced by your budget but remember that it isn’t just about the dress. You need to factor in that there will be accessories to buy too like a jacket, earrings, a hat, shoes and a handbag, and a jacket can sometimes cost more than the dress itself. If you see the perfect outfit that blows your budget, you can swap a jacket for a small shawl to save money.
